WHAT AWESOME WEEKS THESE WERE!
First, He rose from the dead after a horrible torture and death thereby, throwing the whole world momentarily, into confusion, then excitement and then celebration, the kind of which was never witnessed before. But, before the reality of his resurrection began to sink in, however, he became elusive, appearing and disappearing to his disciples. At a certain point he even had to prove that he was not a ghost by eating some broiled fish in the presence of his disciples after the two disciples returned and narrated their own encounter with him at Emmaus. Then, he breathed on them thus, imparting the power of the Hoy spirit and peace upon them, which transformed their lives forever, from timidity to temerity.
Yes, His name is Jesus! He is indeed risen. And to this day, emboldened by the outpouring of the same Holy spirit, his disciples have never stopped proclaiming his resurrection and performing miracles through his name, the only name that works miracles and transforms lives. The name that has power. What awesome weeks these were as we all reflected on these amazing events.
Then, last weekend, we celebrated the other deeper aspect of the resurrection, his divine mercy. The divine mercy gives meaning to his death and resurrection because this mercy is the ultimate expression of God’s magnanimous love over all His creatures, above all, over man. And what is even more awesome is that this mercy is available to everyone; available to clear the mess and baggage in our own lives. We all need this divine mercy because our world today is becoming increasingly messy and torn apart because of the lack of mercy. Look at the situation in Ukraine and several other parts of the world including our own beautiful country for instance. Messy! Despite all these, the resurrection after the torturous ordeal of Good Friday that saw his side pierced with a lance from which issued blood and water gives us hope that his mercy will prevail over the mess and cynical world, we are living in. This is what we celebrated last weekend and what an awesome week that was!
To set the tone for this awesome celebration however, we had our own dose of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on our adorable children when Bishop Olmsted gave them the sacraments of Confirmation and first Holy Communion. Unfortunately, even though I had looked forward to this celebration throughout my days of retreat last week, I was unable to join in the joy of this great event in the lives of our children due to a sudden COVID-like attack. However, from what bishop Olmsted shared with me in his brief e-mail afterwards, it was clearly a great celebration in many respects. He affirmed this in these words:
“It was a great joy to celebrate Confirmation at St. Andrew Parish …..The young people were well prepared for the Sacraments and were exceptionally good lectors at Mass. It gives us much hope for the Church’s future.” These words, coming from our own bishop was very reassuring to me. I feel so proud to have been an intimate part of this great parish with these equally amazing children, indeed the future of our parish and of our Church, for the past six and half years. What a blessing! Children, I love you and thank you so much!
I want to take this opportunity to thank Fr. Teilo, the Director of Children’s Religious Education and his diligent catechists, Kim Doyle, Yvette Meyer, Eneida Scoby, Kristen Hew, Barb Watercotte, Bridget Beville, Marta Lucente, Lisa Durso, Kathy Czeranko, Julie Dworaczyk, Teri Gerloff, Greg John Osborne and Stephanie Durland for taking time to prepare these children so well. Through your excellent efforts, that celebration set the perfect tone not only for the celebration of the Divine Mercy Sunday but also for the feast of Pentecost which is on the horizon. Well done! What an awesome week that was!
And finally, I also thank the parents and sponsors of each one of these children for being role models for your children and showing to them by your own witness how important it is to receive the initiation sacraments of Confirmation and the Eucharist. Keep on doing that and never neglect to bring them to Mass since they still cannot drive. Thank you so much and may the risen Lord Jesus Christ continue to bless you all.
St. Andrew, I love you and wish you a blessed Easter Season.
-Fr. Robert
