Reflections as We Begin Lent
“Brothers and sisters: We are ambassadors for Christ, as if God were appealing through us.” (2 Cor 5:20)
We are a couple of days into Lent 2021. Our Scripture readings are packed full of inspiration and reminders of what is important for us to do at this time. St. Paul reminds us that we are all ambassadors of Christ as his followers. What do people learn about Christ through observing us especially when we are asked to give up, take up, give away, pray frequently, mortify, and abstain- all the while being cheerful Christians?
Have you ever heard the expression; faith is caught more than taught? I believe this is what St. Paul is getting at in calling us ambassadors. Our hopeful, happy witness does good for us personally and for those observing us. Christ needs his followers to be faith-filled examples of His love, by loving those unlovable. By feeding those who are hungry in their body or mind, we are Christ reaching into that void and providing nourishment both natural and supernatural. When we dedicate more time for prayer, we become more like our Maker, and we are quicker to recognize and resist the temptations the world has to offer.
Sunday’s Gospel reminds us of the proper ways to fast, by living out the beatitudes. As ambassadors of Christ, it is our duty and responsibility to help one another by feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, visiting the sick and so on. Through the Prophet Isaiah, God reminds us that when we do these things, He will hear us when we call out to Him.
Fr. Bouyer, a French priest who passed away in 2004, said it so clearly, “Asceticism in all its forms has therefore no other purpose but that of leading us to abandon ourselves in everything through faith to the love of God...” It all comes back to relationship and love. If we say we love God, we must desire to do everything in our power to please him. That begins in loving one another and following the commandments.
One way to stretch out and love this Lent is to pray with us during our 40 Days for Life campaign. Sign up this weekend in the courtyard. Journey Toward Holiness has also begun but it is never too late to sign up and participate.www.stndrw.cc/jth

Safe Haven Sunday
Equipping the Family, Safeguarding Children
January 21, 2021 | 3:30pm – 4:30pm
Inside the Church
The family home is to be a safe haven. But the inappropriate use of technology in the home deprives it of this role, and is the greatest threat to the sanctity of marriages and families today. Pornography and other online threats are often one click away, and parents can feel overwhelmed with not knowing how to best protect their children in our fast-paced digital world.
We hope to see you THIS SUNDAY, as we provide access to practical resources that any caring adult can use to protect themselves and our young people from online risks. Open to all adults, teens, and middle schoolers.
